War memorial for all the fallen and missing soldiers of World Wars I and II
It’s an iron sculpture weighing 2500 Kilos that took a whole year to be made.
This sculpture overturns the concept of war memorial, in which usually the fallen soldier is represented as a hero. Here the soldier is a victim of a three-headed Hydra, that represents the three powers of arms, dictatorship and money. On the rifle there is a notch with the silent consent of the Catholic Church to the two last World Wars.
The war memorial, unveiled in Canale in 1977, has been shown through a travelling exhibition in the main cities of Northern Italy, causing its author Gino Scarsi to be sued four times for public defamation (all the proceedings ended with complete discharge). The monument found its final placing in the city of Acri (Cosenza), where it has been from 1984.
